SONIA SMITH
Registered Psychologist (Candidate)

Sonia Smith, M.Ed. is a Psychologist (Candidate Register) with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology.  She offers both individual and Equine Enhanced Therapy. She adheres to a biopsychosocial approach to wellness and recognizes the interconnectedness of physical well-being and social systems with mental health. Sonia has training in Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Internal Family Systems. She has experience working with youth (14+), adults, first responders and correctional staff, veterinary providers, and individuals involved with the criminal justice system. Sonia also offers psychological assessments and is specialized in forensic risk assessment

Sonia spends much of her leisure time at the barn with her horse, Willy, where she is an Equestrian Canada Licenced Coach.  Sonia has recently combined her love for horses and counselling via the post-graduate Equine Assisted Mental Health Practitioner program at the University of Denver. As of 2025, Sonia is the only psychologist in Nova Scotia offering counselling that incorporates horses.
